The annual Memorial Day service at Kinder Cemetery will be held at 2 p. m., June 5, at the cemetery. Bill Guthrie of Litchfield, President of the Cemetery Board, will preside at a short memorial service. An honor roll of the 20 veterans, including two from the Black Hawk War, will be read. The graves of each of the veterans will be decorated with an American flag.
Other friends and relatives buried at Kinder Cemetery also will be remembered. The annual memorial service at Kinder Cemetery has taken place for nearly a half century. The cemetery is located two miles south of Hornsby, which is located halfway between Gillespie and Litchfield on Illinois Route 16.
To reach the cemetery, drive through Hornsby and travel about two miles, turn left on Brand Road, then south on an unmarked country lane. The cemetery cannot be seen from the road, but is a 3.5-acre site with more than 200 graves.
The Cemetery Board, all volunteers, pay for the cemetery upkeep and frequent mowing during the summer season. Donations for the upkeep of the cemetery can be sent to Treasurer Lloyd Nail, 911 N. Monroe, IL 62056, or may be given at the service.
