Ally Bires of Gillespie was one of five recipients to receive an Olin Scholarship. Bires, the daughter of John and Ann Bires, is a senior at Gillespie High School and will be attending Southern Illinois University of Carbondale in the fall of 2017 to major in mechanical engineering.
The Olin Scholarship Program is a $2500 scholarship for four years. The program has been in existence since 1969 and has helped 279 students with their college careers. The scholarship program has a two-fold objective: 1) to recognize, through financial assistance for education, Olin employees’ children who have demonstrated their ability to achieve academic excellence and who have the spirit to go on to be the best they possibly can be and 2) demonstrate the company’s commitment to the support of higher education.
Scholarship recipients are chosen on the basis of their scores on competitive tests administered by the American College Testing Service.
Bires was awarded the scholarship at a luncheon sponsored by Olin on Tuesday, May 2. Other recipients include Matthew Kinnunen, Gabrielle Krieg, Jacob Smith and Rylee Wilson.
