The Black Diamond Days 5K run & 1-mile run/walk is entering into its 40th anniversary and will be held on Saturday, June 8. The 5K will begin at 8 AM approximately, with the 1-mile run/walk to begin 30 minutes prior to that at approximately 7:30 AM. The race will begin near Randy’s Market in Gillespie and will travel down historic Macoupin St. out to the Bike Trail and back.
This event has been a staple for the celebratory weekend all those years, thanks to the late Charlie Pohlman and his legacy. A Gillespie graduate himself (Class of 1974), Charlie was an advocate and selfless educator who stressed exercise and the importance of an active lifestyle in his 32 years as a teacher.
To honor that legacy, the race coordinators have decided that a scholarship will be given in Charlie’s name to one deserving Gillespie senior. The scholarship will be awarded to a young adult that epitomizes healthy living, has an affinity for cardiovascular fitness, exudes integrity, and possesses a selflessness that allows others to have the opportunity to succeed.
The coordinators are adhering to the race setup that has been in place for so many years in this inaugural scholarship year. However, they believe the race may evolve and change in the forthcoming years. With that said, they will continually identify the race with the legacy that Charlie has built.
If you are interested in participating or donating to the scholarship race, then registration forms can be found at either Ageless Fitness center facility (Gillespie or Staunton). One can also find information on Facebook on the Black Diamond Days or Ageless pages.
