Two 19-year-old Granite City men have been charged in connection with the shooting of a 30-year-old male late Wednesday night in Gillespie, according to Illinois State Police.

The office of Macoupin County State’s Attorney Jennifer Watson confirmed late Thursday that Cody R. McGuire (pictured top left), 19, of Granite City is charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated battery in connection with the the shooting of Lee Jason Walton, 30, in Gillespie.  McGuire is accused of shooting Walton in the face and chest with a .38 caliber handgun.

David P. McGuire (pictured top right), 19, also of Granite City is charged with aggravated battery for allegedly causing great bodily harm to Walton by striking Walton in the head with his fist.

ISP Master Sgt. Dave Wasmuth said Thursday that the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department received a call shortly before midnight reporting a shooting in the 700 block of West Gillespie Street in Gillespie. Gillespie City Police and Macoupin County Sheriff’s deputies reportedly responded to the scene where they found Walton suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Wasmuth said the two suspects fled the scene on foot and were located a short time later hiding in a garage near the crime scene. Both men were transported to Macoupin County Jail.

The victim was transported to a Springfield hospital, where he was listed in critical condition late Thursday, according to Wasmuth.

A caller to the South County News on Thursday, who did not identify herself, said she was a friend of Walton’s. She said Walton formerly resided in Carlinville and currently resides in Litchfield. She indicated Walton was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Wasmuth said it is unknown whether the victim was a member of the household where the shooting took place or whether he was a guest.

Gillespie Police Chief Dean Plovich referred all inquiries to the Illinois State Police, which is handling the investigation.
“It’s too early for us to know any motive,” Wasmuth said. “We’re still working on whether the suspects from Granite City knew the victim or whether there was any relationship between them.”

Both suspects were scheduled to make an initial appearance in Macoupin County Circuit Court on Friday.

What does a persons criminal history have to do with him being a victim today!!! Welcome to the 21st century…….

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kathryn-Sias/1360640886 Kathryn Sias

What does Jasons past have to do with this post, as if he had done anything wrong at this time? Wow, some reporting here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Davey-Holmes/1083544814 Davey Holmes

This is horrible reporting, reporting a shooting victims criminal past for no apparent reason is just garbage, maybe this reporter should change careers

  • Georgiasue81

Where are the criminal records of the SUSPECTS? Jason is the victim here, what does a criminal record from 10 years ago have to do with this? People can change. Prayers to the family.

    • Azleggy1

      they don’t have a criminal record… it’s their 1st offense.

  • Joshuaedwards64

that man was like a brother to me and he paid his dues and debt to society thats wrong to bring that past up

    • Cassiemorgan86

i strongly agree, thats not right!

    • Carramarie

you are right bro david ambrose is an idiot thats who did the writing maybe he should cover some different kind of stories fing loser

  • county resident who is fed up

well it is like this people two held on attempted murder and assault and battery but dont feel bad for the victim because he too has a record. Now see we dont need a judge and jury because we have already convicted the two perps and the victim hummmm thanks to that snazzy reporting we just saved the county some money

  • Kevin

Waltons record shows his character and the kind of people that he associated with…..his record is public.

    • Joshuaedwards64

uh no it dosnt show his character he was a f ing kid then people change ….So what your saying is that everyone he hung around with is bad people how bout who those two boys hang with does that mean they are young ignorent murderers no it dosnt people make choice there own choices in life and the reson for that is to learn from it KEVIN

    • Carramarie

you kevin dont know what happened you werent there and as far as we are all concerned your opinion is not wanted or needed u should shut your mouth when it comes to situations u know nothing about your comment shows us all what kind of character you have as for public record if we wanted to know his criminal past we can look it up ourselves his history has nothing to do with him being shot and killed jason walton was a great man a great cook a wonderful friend brother uncle son and man so the reporting should have been on the victim being shot not what his criminal past is. also for your info there is no proof that he even knew these people at all!!!!! and no matter what his character noone deserves to be MURDERED.

  • Jennifer7891

i agree what his past got to do with anything.jason is a wonderful person who didnt deserve this.this was an act of violent nature that noone should have done to them.eveyone make mistakes .he is a woderful who changed his life around ………..

  • tracey

i am a family friend to the walton and jason pass is what it is. he made mistakes and learned from them. he payed his dues and debts for his crime . what about the crimes that the suspects have done? why arent they listed or brought to the public atention ? jason is the victim here ? david and cody are the suspects . jason has changed and got his life together he is a wonderful person ,a great friend, a brother ,a son, and a uncle . to publish his criminal history is uncalled for . this man is struggling for his life .

  • Chunk42053

i hope them two sob’s get wat they deserve cuz jason died this morning he didnt deserve any of this cuz he’s such a good person and now because of them two no will ever know how good of a person he was i hope they both rot in hell

  • Bad_busa

I think I will hold on my opinion until I hear the motive……that will tell what kind of people we are dealing with…..something went wrong some where.

  • Carramarie

just an update l jason walton passed away today at 1058 i hope these punks rot in hell for this jason is family and they deserve to be tortured for the rest of there lives nothing will ever be enough for what they have taken away from all the people that loved him. i feel sick thinking about those worthless punks

  • FormerGillespian

Relevance of the victim’s past? Great reporting, guys. Is the take away that it’s OK to shoot a man in the face if he has a criminal record?

If you really want this online paper to take off you should stick to the facts of a given story. These kids were 9 years old when the victim got into trouble–I highly doubt that whatever his crimes may have committed a decade ago had anything to do with motive. And if you can’t make that claim, his past has no place in this article.

    • FormerGillespian

…whatever crimes “he” may have committed…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kathryn-Sias/1360640886 Kathryn Sias

He just passed away, moments ago, or so I hear straight from the family, so there you know. You are right, that could have been yet another “fact” that this unthoughtful reporter and the paper who allowed it published could have mentioned, that he had become a great person (was to start with actually)….give us facts and good news. Let me make a speech if I might.

I know law and you (the newspaper) posted facts, but if there was some way to sue your butts off for reporting this in such a obviously slanted way, with such disregard to this young mans precious life, then I would have your butts for sure. No one knows WHY IT HAPPENED, no one understands seriel killers either, there doesn’t have to be a reason for someone to kill, obviously.

And I know Macoupin county detectives rather well, they’re racist too for sure, one in particularly a liar and definatly someone with no regard for the lives of others. I had one officer from there tell me I could kill a drug dealer he said and he would wipe up the mess and noone would get hurt. HE WAS SERIOUS YA’LL cause we did go to the drug dealers house, we broke into his hous and took a phone back that he stole. I’m not ashamed to say, but this cop just laughed, and obviously no charges were pressed. Now looking back, 7 years later, I’m totally changed to, from the inside out, and it’s a lot to do with how dirty the law is too, not all others. THIS IS THE TRUTH YA’LL Macoupin County and all who law there and somehow knows what I am talking about. God will take care of you. You’re so self-righteous I would love to know your past, because I damn sure know your present and compared to mine, I’M A SAINT FOR SURE, you can’t touch my character compared to yours. RIP Jason.

    • Wise Old Man

What a pathetic post, seriously know nothing about Macoupin County Sheriff’s Dept. Seems to me like you cant even read. It is clearly stated that ISP is handling this case but you are talking about a dirty Macoupin County Detective… hmm those guys aren’t even handling it! And you say “Not alll, but some (are racist)!” How many detectives does Macoupin County have then? Apperantly you know.

      • PendulumsPromise

What a pathetic post. You seriously know nothing about comma usage. What is the need to be such a police apologist? Maybe you are a bigot apologist? I cannot really tell.

Personally, I smell butthurt bacon trying to feel better about his role in forcefully managing society.

      • http://www.sovereignfunding.com Kathryn Sias

What’s pathetic about telling the truth. And don’t think for a minute this cop hasn’t put his two cents into the investigation.  Sounds like you might be the cop, lol  Get a grip, I have a right to my opinion, I know more than you think!  The law may be handling this okay, how would I know, all I’m saying is that it’s not right, I saw too much and know too much. This is why I am not in Macoupin county any longer. Macoupin county should be on 60 minutes, to investigate the facts or statements I’m making. I’ve seen them do this in another state where I lived and reported on something much the same, and trust me, I was right, they agreed.

  • Kleber982009

I truly believe that people can change, it doesn’t matter if something happened a day ago or a decade ago, there is a reason why it is called “THE PAST”! People should learn to forgive more and this world of ours might be a better place to live. I don’t know Jason, but he certainly didn’t deserve to be MURDERED. My prayers go out to all of his family and friends. RIP Jason.

  • Joeshmoe

sorry. but obviously he was doing something wrong here. Drugs would be my guess..I mean look at their pictures. You can tell those two are strung out on something. Just the fact that Jason was hanging out with these 2 kids tells you that he wasn’t the most innocent person in the world.

    • dontneedtoknow

Hmmm well nobody is innocent in this world, so do we all deserve to be shot? There is nothing to justify this. Nobody is being ignorant we lost a friend/family member, we are upset and venting.

    • Chickbaby16

obviously he didnt do anything wrong them twins had a gun at the house this took place at and jason didnt want them to have the guns around the kids he asked them nicely to get away from the kids and they didnt agree to wat he was sayin and they pistol whipped him and killed my brother best friend for no f ing reason!!!! He was a piece keeper and yes ppl make mistakes that u learn from. We all have backgrounds. He didnt deserve it.

  • Joeschmoe

and they aren’t trying to criminalize him. They are merely stating that someone by the same name had that record. They are trying to determine whether or not he resided at the place that the shooting took place or if he was living somewhere else. Quit being ignorant.

  • Ash

I forgot to mention about those two cowardly punks that did this to our friend/family. Hope you boys get the treatment you deserve in prison and burn in hell. It takes a real heartless coward to do what you two did, and I hope you get everything you deserve while your in prison and after you die.

  • H8tnalluH8trs

Oh and them 2 men in the pictures above look like child molesters to me!

  • Thebengilpost

Mr. Walton’s prior history has been removed from the article. According to Mr. Ambrose, he could not find any prior history on the McGuire brothers in Macoupin and Montgomery counties. His intention on adding the victim’s history was in no way an attempt to infer the victim was to blame. If it was taken in that context, we sincerely apologize to anyone who has been affected.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Walton family.

  • Karmic

Here’s a novel idea. Regardless of whether you know or are acquainted with who was involved in this incident, hows about actually WAITING FOR THE DETAILS OF THE CASE TO EMERGE, you know, maybe a third-party EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT of what actually happened here before you’re ready to proverbially stone ppl to death. If you are a loved one or family member of the victim, I understand your feelings of grief or of anger, but try to reign that all in for now, man. Damn…

    • Joshuaedwards64

      no one asked you

  • Frank

I knew both of them little bast*ards… They “hail” from the Arizona area.. Both are into drugs and are wanna be “gangsters” .. There mother Judith Pullins, worked at various bars in Granite City, IL. They where evicted by Granite City Police/DEA in Granite city, IL which made the CH. 2 news. There was NUMEROUS police reports made in Granite City for fighting and drugs.

  • Juan

Ppl say wAt u want i knew David and Cody like brothers if they shot and killed the man they had a reason I understand if someone does something wrong they don’t deserve to get shot but don’t take it as if they are horrible ppl they just made mistakes and yes they did get kicked out of granite and fought but I believe it’s none of you alls damn business Cody and David will always be like family to me. Yes I’m pissed and mad about there poor decisions but I have hung and kicked it with them for a very long time rip to the man they shot and I will prolly never see Cody again he is facing big time Wich I don’t feel should be as long as it is he will never be able to have kids nor a family which I feel should be Enough punishment. A hundred yrs is a very long time I think. This case should go for further investigation like does anyone know why he did it huh…prolly not it sucks I can’t see them and if I wanna talk to them I gotta pay 10 dollars a damn call

  • azleggy1

wow…what happened to the court & jury? i’m sure the trial hasn’t even started yet but everyone here has them convicted…. wow. welcome to america idiots. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN guilty. learn the law stupid.
