Dear Community Members,
Please afford me the opportunity to address the questions surrounding the issue of bullying at Gillespie Community Unit School District #7. CUSD #7 has a policy addressing bullying in place and accessible on the district website, in the district office and in the main office of all three attendance centers. This policy states CUSD #7 prohibits bullying and expects all students and staff to conduct themselves with respect for the rights of all members of the educational community.
In addition, the policy outlines how to make a report of bullying, establishes guidelines for investigating claims and procedures for intervention. All district staff members make student safety a priority and refer claims of inappropriate behavior to administration when appropriate. In turn, administration makes every effort to investigate all claims thoroughly.
I encourage any student or parent with knowledge of bullying to report this information to a building administrator immediately. Communication with the school district is essential to investigating a problem and putting preventions into place as well as disciplining those exhibiting inappropriate behavior. Similarly, I ask all parents to speak with their children regarding the importance of respecting the value of all individuals and the negative consequences of bullying.
Claims of bullying will be investigated thoroughly and in an expedient manner when possible. I can assure you claims are taken seriously as are all matters of student safety. Recent public conversation relative to bullying has provided an opportunity for me to speak to staff members, students, parents and community members concerning this serious issue. Administration has talked to staff members recently and is in the process of forming a committee to review the current process for addressing bullying.
In closing, please feel free to contact me with any question or concerns at 217-839-2464. I welcome the opportunity to discuss this issue or any other issues related to the education of all students.
Sincerely,
Joseph Tieman
Superintendent
