Jonny Darrah and Maxx Fritz, both juniors, of the Mt. Olive Wrestling Wildcats advanced to the State wrestling tournament after respectively finishing first and second in the IHSA Sectional Wrestling Tournament in Vandalia over the weekend.
Darrah at 160 was a sectional champion after starting the tournament with a bye as a result of his previous week’s regional championship, then winning 16-10 over Ryan Johnson of Mt. Carmel and later 7-3 over Jeremy Starwalt of Shelbyville. Darrah won the championship bout by major decision 16-7 over Joel Cook of Pittsfield.
Fritz at 152 finished second losing the final to Danny Braunagel 17-7. Before the championship bout, Fritz defeated Dylan Doerr of Carlyle by fall, Arieh Hart of Anna Jonesboro by major decision 10-1 and technical fall 18-3 over Daric Austin of Shelbyville.
Senior Dylan Roberts at 182 and junior Justin Osmoe at 195 also wrestled in the sectional for Mt. Olive, but didn’t advance. Roberts lost 2-5, won 12-1 by major decision and then lost 8-18. Osmoe lost 6-8 in overtime, won 5-4 and later lost 0-6. Both Roberts and Osmoe received byes to start the sectional tournament after their regional championships and both will attend the state tournament as alternates in their weight class.
The State wrestling tournament to be held at Champaign in the State Farm Center on Thursday, February 16, Friday, February 17, and Saturday, February 18. Jonny and Maxx are scheduled to wrestle in the afternoon session Thursday, February 16 which is scheduled to start at 1 pm.
