Billy Jo Bates, 43, known to good friends and family as “Snowball”, passed away at his home in Birmingham, Alabama on February 27, 2019. Bill, a lifelong resident of Carlinville, graduated from Carlinville High School in 1994 with a large circle of friends who were by his side through his many interests and businesses. He excelled in 4-H woodworking and was a National FFA Wildlife winner.
Bill was a member of one of the most winning Carlinville football teams. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. Nature and his family were his first loves. His 25-year career in the concrete business began at an early age. He was the owner/operator of Bates Concrete Co. of Carlinville and J and J Concrete Pumping of Springfield. His innovative nature helped him also start up the Mossy Oaks Hunting Dogs breeding and training business. His latest business development in Alabama is “R U Prepping”, tower organic grow containers that produce vegetables for urban dwellers. Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church of Carlinville and past officer in the Illinois Hunting Dog Federation.
Bill is survived by his parents, Gary Wayne Bates (father), Mary Anita Tinder (mother), and Randolph Tinder (stepfather), of Carlinville; sister, Bobbi Jean Bates of Carlinville; two nieces, Macy Ann Walker and Ella Marie Walker of Carlinville; nephew, Grant Michael Walker of Carlinville; aunt, Catherine Parrill of Birmingham, AL; cousins, Angela Parrill Senicz of Birmingham, AL and Adrienne Parrill Applegate of Sylva, North Carolina; several aunts, uncles and cousins of the Parrill family from Collinsville, Tennessee, Colorado and Michigan; Carlinville relatives, Ed and Karen Bates and their children and grandchildren, Stacy Kravanya and Kristy Fenton, Frank and Sharon Bates, Jackie Davis, Jamie Gillespie, Jodie Starr, the late Sandy (Bates) England Compton, Eric England, and Amy Heffelfinger of Sterling, IL.
Bill was preceded in death by Kenneth and Ruth Parrill (maternal grandparents), Wayne and Lillian Bates, (paternal grandparents), Polly Parrill (Aunt), Sandra Bates England Compton (Aunt) and Parker Fenton (cousin), all of Carlinville.
Visitation services will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2019, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Carlinville United Methodist Church, Carlinville followed by a memorial service at the church. Memorials may be presented in Bill’s name to the Carlinville Tree City USA Program. Kravanya Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
