Helen Thiems, 83 of New Douglas, died Sunday, June 14 at 1:15 a.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. She was born on Monday, February 15, 1932 in Litchfield, IL to Andrew and Catherine (Matasae) Luketich. She married Gilbert C. Thiems on September 26, 1959, in Wilsonville, IL. He preceded her in death on Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
She was a cafeteria worker for the Olin Brass Corporation manufacturing facility in East Alton, IL. Helen was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livingston, IL, a former member of the St. Ubaldus Catholic Church in New Douglas, IL, Tobias Bilyeu American Legion Auxiliary in New Douglas, IL, the New Douglas Senior Citizens, the Madison County Home Extension and she was active as a room mother while her children were in grade school.
Helen in survived by daughters, Connie Thiems of New Douglas, IL and Joyce (Steve) Murdick of Overland Park, KS; son, Glenn Thiems of New Douglas, IL; three grandchildren, Matthew (Katie) Murdick of Belton MO, Mark Murdick of Overland Park KS and Thomas Murdick of Belton MO; two great granddaughters, Nella Murdick and Lucy Murdick; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Andy and Catherine (Matasae) Luketich, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert C. Thiems; twin sister, Mary Catherine who died at birth; and sister: Anne Fraelle.
Visitation services will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a scripture service beginning at 5:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church which is located at 184 Livingston Avenue in Livingston.
Interment will take place at New Douglas Cemetery in New Douglas, IL with Fr. George Radosevich as clergy. Memorials in memory of Helen Thiems can be made to the New Douglas Fire Department, the Unknown Soldier Monument Fund, or for Masses.
