Jan Lee Schaefer, 68, of Staunton, passed away Friday, May 3, 2019, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born on January 8, 1951, in Litchfield, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elton O. “Peck” and Marcella M. (Wall) Schaefer. He married Pam Behrens on October 16, 1971, and they later divorced.
He worked as a Correctional Officer at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro for 22 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton Board of Evangelism at Zion; Bocci Club of Concordia Hall of Staunton; big Cardinals fan; and author of two short stories. Jan also enjoyed gardening and landscaping and had a great love of humor/sarcasm. He was a devoted father and grandfather and a humble philanthropist.
He is survived by two daughters, Janeen (Michael) Griewing of Edwardsville and Danelle (Buddy) Bartels of Mahomet, Illinois; five grandchildren, Brayden & Eastyn Griewing, Kameron, Marinne, & Estella Bartels; former spouse and good friend, Pam Schaefer of Hillsboro; sister-in-law, Sharon Schaefer of Staunton; and two nephews, Jeff and Kevin Schaefer.
Besides his parents, Jan was preceded in death by one daughter, Krista Schaefer; grandson, Isaiah Griewing; and brother, Ronnie Schaefer.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 10, 2019, at 10:30 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton with Rev. Kelly Mitteis officiating. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton.
