Joan A. (Makstell) Larson, 71, of Worthington, Ohio, passed away on August 11, 2013 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Selma (Lueker) Makstell of Sawyerville, the beloved mother of Amy (Richard) Price of Norfolk, Virginia, and the sister of Marian Lynch of La Grange Park, Illinois. She was formerly married to Barry Larson, whom she met and married in Chicago.
She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, too many cherished friends to list, and would have been overjoyed to meet her first, much-anticipated grandchild, Juliet, born in September 2013.
Joan was a graduate of Immanuel Lutheran grade school in Mt. Olive Illinois, a 1960 graduate of Benld High School and a 1964 graduate of Bradley University. She participated in many clubs, sports, and activities.
She was later a resident of Massachusetts, before relocating to Ohio, where she remained for 40 years. A self-described lifelong learner, Joan delighted in supporting the local library, museums of all types, gardening, politics, history, science, and the arts.
Joan also had a compassion for animals, a love for reading, travel, and bringing new friends together. She was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church, Sigma Kappa fraternity, the League of Women Voters, Worthington Historical Society, Scandinavian Club, and countless other pursuits. She was a long-time employee of State Savings Bank and later Fifth Third Bank in Clintonville.
Her loving and generous spirit, sense of humor, and uncomplaining strength in the face of suffering will be remembered by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank all of those who supported and cared for Joan during her illness. A burial service will be held at Benld Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 8 in Benld, Illinois.
