LaVonne Phillips, 91, of St. Louis, MO, formerly of Mt. Olive, IL, Saturday, August 15, 2015, at 4:35 a.m., at Delmar Gardens South in Saint Louis, MO. She was born on December 11, 1923, in Nokomis, IL to the late Katherine Hennings and William Haddow, Sr. She married Fred Phillips in 1956 in St. Louis and they later divorced.
LaVonne attended Nokomis and Mt. Olive Grade Schools, and later graduated from Mt. Olive High School with the Class of 1941. After high school, she graduated from Rubicam Business College in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a former member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Mt. Olive, IL and was active with the Methodist Youth Group.
She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in St. Louis as a clerk for 30 years and retired in 1990. Her first employment was a secretary for Rice-Stix in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon retirement she tutored students. She loved traveling and theatre and was an avid Cardinal baseball fan.
LaVonne is survived by nieces, Darlene Boggio Hendrickson of Kirkwood, MO and JoAnn (Albert) Bloch of Dardene Prarie, MO; two great nieces and two great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Katherine Hennings Haddow, Sr.; three sisters, Dorothy Smith, Bernice Dhesse and Viola Boggio; and brother, William Haddow, Jr.
Visitation services will take place on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at 10:00 am until the time of service at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive, IL. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Tommy Brewer serving as clergy. Burial will follow at Union Miners Cemetery in Mt. Olive.
Memorials are suggested to the Union Miners Cemetery in Mt. Olive.
