Margaret Jane Garrett, 87 of Carlinville, formerly of Linton, IN, passed away Wednesday morning, June 3, 2015, at Heritage Health Care in Litchfield, IL. Margaret was born on December 9, 1927, to Charles and Myrtle (Harbin) Lind in Carlisle, IN. She graduated from Pleasantville High School with the class of 1944.
She later graduated from Indiana State University with degrees in science and education. On August 14, 1946 she married Everett Gene Garrett at the Methodist Parsonage in Pleasantville, IN and he preceded her in death on August 30, 2009.
Margaret retired from teaching in 1983. She taught in Terre Haute, IN and in Harrisburg, IL. She was the department chairman for home economics at Harrisburg High School. Margaret was a member of the NEA, IEA, DAR and the Association of American University Women, as well as the Carlinville Area Hospital Auxiliary, Woman’s Club, Macoupin County Historical Society, the Society of Indiana Pioneers, and the Home Economics Association. She was also a member of the Carlinville United Methodist Church.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Terry Jane (Dr. James Kirk) Hess of Hillsboro, IL; two grandsons, Brian Hess of Chicago, IL and Sean (Kristy) Hess of Fenton, MO; great grandson, Aiden Hess; sister, Lois Elaine Persons of St. Augustine, FL, and 2 nieces, Suzan Vandervelde and Sandra Griffin.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville with Rev. Robert Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Carlinville United Methodist Church, Carlinville Public Library or the Macoupin County Historical Society.
