Marilyn Eileen Rhodes, age 84, of Gillespie, passed away April 30, 2019. She was the daughter of Dories and Emma Osterman. She was born March 1, 1935, on the farm in Gillespie. She was married December 5, 1954, to Dale Rhodes for 58 years.
She graduated from Gillespie High School with the class of 1953 and started working for Purina in St. Louis. She worked as a legal secretary for Judge Maurice Macy and attorneys Alvin Whitehouse and Harold Tunnel. She enjoyed working on their family owned and operated farm and elevator. She remained active on the farm and enjoyed driving her tractor up until the time of her death. They also bred, raised, trained and showed Arabian show horses for many years and won many awards. She also had a passion for traveling. They visited almost every state in the US as well as Europe, Canada and Mexico.
She has been a member of St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, Mt Olive Cemetery Board, Home Extension and Red Hat Club.
She is survived by her daughters, Debra Baldwin of Springfield and Denise Rhodes Matway; and son in law, Kenneth Matway of Gillespie.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Rhodes; sister, Betty Meininger; son in law, James Randy Baldwin; and nieces, Doris Rowney, Deann Gorka and Donna Lynn Meininger.
Friends may call on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at Kravanya Funeral Home in Gillespie from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. followed by funeral services at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Union Miners Cemetery, Mt. Olive. Memorials are suggested to donor’s choice. Kravanya Funeral Home, Gillespie is in charge of the arrangements.
