Theodore Michael “Ted” Tomso, 79 of Mount Olive, died Sunday, September 13, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. at his residence in Mount Olive, IL. He was born on September 14, 1935, in Mt. Olive to the late Michael Tomso and Mary Bires. He married Norma June Strum on June 7, 1958, at Holy Trinity Church by Father Knaperek in Mt. Olive.
He attended Holy Trinity grade school and graduated from Mt. Olive High School with the Class of 1953. Ted later attended S.I.U. Carbondale for 18 months. He was a member of St. John Paul II, formerly Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where he was baptized, confirmed, married and sang in the Holy Trinity Choir.
Ted was a lift truck driver for Granite City Steel for 41 years before retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Amvets Post #55, Croation Lodge #217, and a lifetime member of the Turner Hall where he bowled and played Kittenball. He was also a precinct committeeman and served on the township and county boards.
He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening, canning and was an avid Cardinal baseball fan. Ted served as an SP4 in the United States Army from November 8, 1956, until discharged from Fort Sheridan, Illinois on November 7, 1958. He received the Good Conduct Medal and served in the reserves until November 7, 1962.
Ted leaves behind his wife, Norma Tomso, Mt. Olive; three sons, Mike Tomso (companion Vicki) of Troy, Mark Tomso ( Companion Julie) of Staunton and Matt (Ami) Tomso of Mt. Olive; two daughters, Terri (Joe) Stewart of Gillespie and Beth Tomso (Companion John) of Litchfield; and sister, Bernadine Weidler of Mt. Olive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Christine Rull; grandson, Steve Tomso; and great-grandson, Mark Tomso.
Visitation services will take place on Wednesday, September 16, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive with rosary at 7:45 p.m. led by Father Larry Anschutz. Funeral mass will be on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Paul II in Mt. Olive with Father Larry Anschutz. Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Mt. Olive.
Lunch will be served for family and friends in the St. John Paul II hall by the Altar and Rosary Society.
Memorials are suggested to the Holy Trinity Cemetery or the Mt. Olive Academic Foundation.
