Wilton Roland “Poke” Simmons, Sr., 102 of Litchfield, passed away on Wed., Nov. 8, 2017, in his home. He was born on May 2, 1915, in Waggoner, IL, (Zanesville Twp) a son of Walter Dot and Lillie (Pratt) Simmons.
He retired from Fiat Allis where he had worked as a tow motor driver. He enjoyed gardening, baseball, working on bicycles, hunting, fishing and working on his Model A car. Most of all, he enjoyed his children and grandchildren. In his last years, he enjoyed going to the boat to gamble.
He married Genevieve Theresa Lasko on Sept. 8, 1936 in Carlinville. She preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 2003. He is survived by four sons, Melvin “Hop” Simmons of Flat Rock, NC, Kenneth Simmons, Wilton Simmons, Jr. and Joe Simmons, all of Litchfield; four daughters, Joyce Gifford of Bement, Mary (Harold) Flynn of Raymond, Barbara (Ronald) Johnson and Lillie Blevins, all of Litchfield; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Maas of Casa Grande, AZ, Hedrick Guinn and Donna Lasko, both of Litchfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; six brothers, Clyde, Roy, Ray, Charles, Lester and Everett Simmons, in infancy; and three sisters, Mary Armour; Alma Bolar & Iva Korunka.
Funeral services will be held Sun., Nov. 12, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Rev. Mike Rogers, of Litchfield Southern Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery in Waggoner. Visitation will be held Sunday from 12:00 p.m. until time of service in the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to Alzheimer’s Association or Providence Cemetery.
