The 54th annual Dorchester Homecoming weekend is going to be a huge success if the amount of discussion on Facebook is any indication. The annual homecoming, which runs until 9:30 p.m. Sunday, is a chance to have some family fun and enjoy the small village of Dorchester. All of the events will take place at Dorchester Park.
Sponsored by the Dorchester Volunteer Fire Department, the homecoming is known for its fresh river fish and has previously been sold out of fish by Sunday afternoon due to the popularity. Sometimes more than 100 people are waiting in line for a batch of fish to come out of the fryer.
For people who aren’t looking forward to fish, the Dorchester ladies will have plenty of food cooking on the grill and fryers along with their delicious homemade pies.
The event kicks off this evening, August 1, at 3 p.m. with a co-ed kittenball game for eighth graders and under. The adult kittenball tournament will start on Saturday followed by separate tournament on Sunday.
In addition to kittenball, a horseshoe tournament will occupy the west side of the park Saturday morning and a washer tournament will occupy the west side of the Park on Sunday afternoon. Registration for horseshoes is at 9 a.m. and pitch is at 10 a.m. while washer registration is at noon on Sunday.
The annual homecoming parade and fireworks will take place on Saturday, the biggest day of the event. The parade will begin at 6 in the evening and fireworks will be launched at dusk.
Live bands and bingo will take place every night under the pavilions. The Owlz will provide live music on Friday evening as they will play from 8 p.m. to midnight. Ultraviolet will take the stage Saturday evening for the same duration, 8 p.m. to midnight, and The Outsiders and The Real Street Band will both be performing on Sunday. The Outsiders will play from noon to 4:00 p.m. and The Real Street Band will play from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The tractor pulls, another highlight of the weekend, will show off machinery muscle on Sunday. Weigh in will be at 10:30 a.m. and pulls will start at 11:30 a.m. Vendors, inflatables and mini golf will also be spread about on the north side of the park around the pavilions for the duration of the weekend.
