The East Girls and West Boys were victorious at the 16th Annual Carlinville Rotary Club All-Star Basketball Classic, sponsored by Country Financial. The West led the east by as many as 26 points (36-10) in the first half, but the East battled back cutting the lead to 100-96 in the fourth quarter.
The East now leads the girls series 10-5, while the West leads the boys series 12-4. Representing Gillespie in the games were Paige Niemeyer (8 points), Abbie Barber (4 points), Karli Carr, and Michael Robbins (4 points).
Taking home the most valuable player awards were Katryel Clark of Auburn for the girls and shared honors for the boys’ award by Jonah Hopper and Joshua Hopper of North Greene.
Kassidy Walters of Greenfield/Northwestern won a shootoff over Sophie Starks of North Mac for the 3-point contest winner. Both players made 10 shots in the first round. In the shootoff, Walters went first and made 7-10 shots from the corners. Starks followed and made 6-10 shots with the final shot just off the mark.
Justin Bailey of Southwestern won a shootoff over Kaiden White of Hillsboro to become the boys’ 3-point contest winner. Both players made 9 shots in the first round. Bailey went first and nailed 8-10 from the corners. White made 5-10 shots.
A record number of eight participants took part in the slam-dunk contest. Matthew Mizera of Lincolnwood/Morrisonville scored 47 out of a possible 50 points to win the contest. Finishing second was Joshua Hopper of North Greene with 41 points and Jonah Hopper of North Greene finished third with 36 points.
Coach of the year awards went to Dave Farris of Auburn who led the Lady Trojans to a 25-6 record and their first Regional title in 22 years and to Brett Berry of North Greene who led the Spartans to 20-plus wins for the first time since 2004-05.
