Maxx Fritz, a sophomore at Gillespie High School, finished second over the weekend in the IHSA sectional wrestling tournament at Carterville and advanced to the State wrestling tournament that will be held Feb. 18-20.

Fritz finished sixth in state last year in the 132-pound weight class as a freshman and returns this year to wrestle in the 145-pound class. He is set to wrestle in the afternoon session Thursday, Feb. 18, which starts at 1 p.m.

At sectionals, Fritz tied a school record for the fastest fall in the 145 weight class of 11 seconds – a record set by Don Osmoe in 1995. After defeating Warren Copeland of New Berlin by fall in 1 minute, he pinned Cody Phillips of Vandalia in 11 seconds. He then defeated Peyton Smith of Benton 10-8, but lost in the finals 6-3.

Other Mt. Olive wrestlers that participated in the sectional were sophomore Jonny Darrah, junior Dylan Roberts and sophomore Jacob Whited.

Darrah won by fall over Kumrey of Carterville, lost 7-0 to eventual champion Brachbill of Shelbyville, won by fall over Doerr of Carlyle, won 5-2 over Carey of Belleville Althoff, and lost by fall to Chambers of Murphysboro. Roberts defeated Deming of Hillsboro 7-1, lost by fall to Craig of Murphysboro, pinned Allen of Carlyle, defeated Garbo of Benton 7-0, and lost by fall to Theile of Pittsfield.

Both Darrah and Roberts will attend the state tourney as alternates in their weight class.

Whited lost 6-5 to eventual champion Powell of Litchfield and lost 10-4 to Stallings of Lawrenceville.
