The Wrestling Wildcats scored 53 points in the 16-team Rich Lovellette Litchfield Tournament where Maxx Fritz finished in the top spot wrestling at 152 and Jonny Darrah finished runner-up at 160.
This tournament had a large number of highly ranked wrestlers according to the rankings produced by Illinois matmen Go Earn It State Rankings.
Fritz scored 26 team points with his championship. He won by fall over Jacob Novak of West Frankfort, won by fall over Luke Zelasko of Pinckneyville, won 3-0 over Wilson Ferry of Orion (ranked 12 by Illinois matmen) and won the championship 6-5 over Arieh Hart of Anna Jonesboro, who is currently ranked 8th at this weight class.
He is presently ranked second at the 152-pound weight class.
Darrah scored 24 team points with his second place finish. He started the tournament by receiving a bye, won by fall over Riley Buchon of Taylorville, won 3-0 over Kyle Dixon of Carlinville, currently listed as honorable mention at 160, and lost the championship bout to Kyle Kalkbrenner of Lena Winslow/Stockton by a score of 4-2 who is presently ranked sixth at the 160 pound weight class. Jonny is ranked 7th at the 160-pound weight class.
- Justin Osmoe at 182 won one match 2 – 1, receved a bye, won 4 – 3, and lost 1 – 0 to score three team points.
- Ryan Reid at 120, Jacob Bailey at 145, and Tyler Reid at 285 each wrestled two matches at this tournament.
They Wildcats host the IHSA Regional on Saturday, February 4 with wrestling scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Teams in the regional include Belleville Althoff, Carlinville, Metro East Lutheran, Litchfield, Mt. Olive, Pittsfield, Roxana and Wood River.
Head coach Ron Ryan has been notified by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association that he will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony to be held in April at their annual banquet.
