The Gillespie boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are preparing for the Carlinville Holiday Tournament that begins on Monday, December 26. The teams will take the floor on three consecutive nights before the title games set to be held on Thursday.
Both of Gillespie’s basketball programs are 3-6 thus far in the season. The boys have lost four straight games to Mater Dei (53-82), Nokomis (54-59), Vandalia (49-78) and Raymond (46-47). Their last win was on November 29 over Carlinville.
The boys team will face Staunton on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m., Litchfield on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. and then Bunker Hill on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.
The girls program is riding a two-game losing streak after losses to Jerseyville (40-51) and Litchfield (29-53). The Lady Miners have bounced back and forth between wins and losses this season. After barely dropping their first two games of the season to Carrollton and Auburn, Gillespie beat Alton-Marquette to get their first win of the season.
After beating the Explorers, the Miners lost to Carlinville in their last game in November by one point (37-38), but bounced back to defeat Vandalia 55-53 on the road December 1. Gillespie then fell to Mt. Olive before defeating Staunton later in the week and since then, they have lost to Jerseyville and Litchfield.
Gillespie’s girls will play before the boys’ team Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday facing off against the same schools. On Monday, the Lady Miners play Staunton at 12:30 p.m. for the tournament’s opening game, then Litchfield on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. and Bunker Hill on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the middle school gym.
The title games on Thursday evening start at noon and conclude with the girls and boys championship games at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
