The Gillespie High School girls cross country team placed 17th in a tough 22-team Sectional meet on Saturday at Trentin Wesclin High School. This ended the girls’ great run this season along with our other girls’ SCC team the Litchfield Panthers.
Both teams were great competitors throughout the season and conducted themselves with good sportsmanship representing the South Central Conference with pride.
The girls ran well despite battling behind-the-scenes injuries and sickness that lingered with them the last few weeks. The girls’ places in the meet are as follows:
- Brynn Baker 47th
- Mia Brawner 64th
- Erika Gill 66th
- Katie Polo 113th
- Lily Brown 119th
- Ryeigh Phillips 122nd
Out of the ten team-scored meets, the girls won five and placed third in three and fourth in one. Of the victories, the capstone was the girls winning the SCC title. This has only been accomplished twice in GHS history with the last title twenty years ago in 2001.
Individually, four girls were awarded All-Conference cross country runners including Erika Gill, Brynn Baker, Mia Brawner and Katie Polo.
“Seeing that this was the first year of cross country for any of these girls their feat was remarkable,” head coach Jack Burns said of the team and individual accomplishments. “The team and coaches extend a heartfelt thanks to all the community members who supported us throughout the season and donated to our program to keep us going seeing that this sport is not school funded.”
