A 57-year-old Gillespie man was charged with disorderly conduct, reckless driving, following too closely, and leave the scene of an accident following an incident Monday in rural Gillespie when a female called the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office regarding a road rage incident and hit and run accident.
Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl said John Maier of Gillespie was taken into custody Wednesday morning after the sheriff’s office located the suspected vehicle on Freemont Road north of Gillespie and was released on bail.
“The suspect gave a full confession, posted bond and was released,” Kahl added.
Police said the incident began when a female passed a white pickup truck sitting in a driveway on Springfield Road in Gillespie with its flashers on. The driver apparently waved his hands out the window at her and then followed her after she passed him allegedly running traffic signs to get closer.
Kahl said the female became scared and decided to keep driving heading out of the city limits of Gillespie on Washer Road. The male passed the female as she slowed down to cross the railroad tracks but then slammed on his brakes trying to block the road and slammed into the side of her vehicle when the female attempted to pass.
