The Gillespie Miners boys’ basketball season came to a close Thursday evening in Southwestern after Roxana outscored the Miners by 10 points in the four-minute overtime period leading to a 47-57 defeat for Gillespie in the semifinal game of the Class 2A Piasa Regional.
Gillespie had a 1-point edge at halftime, 27-26, and opened the third quarter with a 10-4 scoring run to build a 37-30 lead before Roxana stopped the momentum with a timeout. Following the timeout, Roxana outscored the Miners 6-0 before the end of the third quarter leaving Gillespie with a 37-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Less than 4 minutes later, Roxana and Gillespie were tied 39-39 with 4:35 remaining in the game and 1-1 bonus on Gillespie’s side. Senior Jacob Alepra paced the team from the free throw line making 3 of his 4 attempts to give the Miners a 42-41 lead with 3 minutes remaining.
Gillespie struggled on the offensive end making only 28 percent of their attempts
Nick Price extended Gillespie’s lead to 44-41 with a field goal, but Roxana’s Chance Foss hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 44 with 1:50 remaining. The Shells, who beat the Miners earlier in the season, worked the game clock for the last two minutes to attempt to score on a buzzer beater, but their three point attempt fell short and the game went to a 4-minute overtime period.
The Miners scored first after the overtime tip-off, but then Roxana went on a 4-0 scoring before Gillespie halted play with a timeout. After the timeout, Evan Price hit 1 of his 2 bonus free throws, but the Shells put the Miners away after scoring a field goal and later making 7 of their 8 attempted free throws in the overtime period.
Gillespie struggled on the offensive end making only 28 percent of their attempts despite three players in double digit scoring. Nick Price led the team with 13 points, Jacob Alepra added 11 and Quentin Zenner scored 10.
The Miners ended the season with an overall record of 18-10 and a South Central Conference record of 6-3. Seniors Jacob Alepra, Josh Friese and Quentin Zenner depart from the team following Thursday night’s loss.
