Gillespie Police Chief Jared DePoppe would like to notify the public of a potential scam.
On November 10, 2011, the Gillespie Police Department was contacted by a Carlinville Business who advised the Department that they had been contacted by a man allegedly from Gillespie. The man stated he was collecting money owed to the South County News. The man went on to indicate that the Carlinville business owed money, presented them with an invoice, and requested immediate payment.
After an investigation, it was learned that only the Macoupin County Credit Bureau is collecting past due accounts on behalf of the South County News.
If any business or individual is contacted by any persons not with the Credit Bureau, please contact your local police department.
Chief DePoppe would like to remind the citizens of Gillespie to be extra cautions of scams during these difficult economic times.
Please report any suspicious activity to the Gillespie Police Department at 217-839-2922.
