The Gillespie Middle School seventh grade boys’ basketball team (22-2) defeated no. 1 seed Girard North Mac 34-24 to win the Class 7-3A Regional Tournament championship last Wednesday at Girard North Mac.
Coach Tim Wargo said the team started the game in a zone defense with the intent to slow down North Mac. The Indians faced a man-to-man defensive style, but it didn’t seem to reduce their scoring as the Indians led 8-3 after the first quarter of play.

The Indians’ defensive woes continued in the final quarter, but their free throw percentage carried them to victory. North Mac outscored Gillespie 11-7 in the fourth quarter, but the Indians were able to edge out the victory with crucial free throws.
