ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis softball posted a 4-0-1 record in fall action last weekend, playing a single game at SIU Edwardsville and four contests at the College Reverse Tournament in Ferguson, Mo.
The Billikens opened the weekend with a 2-2, 10-inning tie at SIUE Sept. 23 before reeling off four consecutive victories. SLU defeated Lindenwood 6-1 and Washington University 6-0 Sept. 24, then shut out Fontbonne 3-0 and McKendree 1-0 Sept. 25.
The Bills’ pitching and defense were solid. Senior right-hander Hannah Huebbe did not allow a run in 18 innings and yielded just five hits and four walks while striking out 21. Senior right-hander Kelcie Matesa, who tossed a no-hitter against McKendree, posted a 1.05 ERA, fanned 22 and walked five in 20 innings. The Saint Louis defense committed just three errors all weekend.
Sophomore shortstop Jessica Van Nostrand turned in a team-high .385 batting average (5-for-13) with three RBIs. Senior infielder Rachel Faletto (6-for-16, .375) and freshman outfielder Katie Kroeger (6-for-18, .333) tied for the team lead in hits, with Faletto leading the way in doubles (three) and RBIs (four). Kroeger added four stolen bases in five attempts as Saint Louis swiped 13 bags in 15 tries.
The Billikens conclude fall play with two games in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Saturday, Oct. 1. SLU faces host Southeast Missouri State at 11:30 a.m. and Missouri State at 3:30 p.m.
