The Gillespie Lady Indians matched up with the Mt. Olive Bombers for a conference match-up on Monday, October 3. The Indians won the eighth grade game 29-25, but dropped the seventh grade game 40-19.
Coach Kevin Gray led the eighth grade team while Coach Andy Easton is in full control of the seventh grade team. The experience of girls basketball among the two coaches is more than the projected lifespan of an average human.
The girls seventh grade basketball team along with a handful of sixth grades was defeated by the strong Mt. Olive defense. The Indians coughed up the ball countless times, averaging over 5 turnovers each quarter.
The seventh grade squad was led by Ally Bires who recorded 6 points on the 40-19 loss. Other point leaders were: Kylie Dannie (5), Diana Lienemann (4), McKenzie Whitworth (2), and Rylee Sarti (2).
The eighth grade girls were able to close out the evening with a victory. The Indians trailed majority of the game, but battled back late and held the lead until the end on the 29-25 victory.
The Indians took advantage of the Mt. Olive turnovers and cashed them in for easy lay-ups, which was the deciding factor of the game. Bette Hammann led the eighth grade team with 9 points as Abby Eccles and Amanda Schmidt posted 6 points along with Helen Vargo with 4, Regan Goldasich with 2, and Jessica Robbins with 2.
The Indians lost both games to Litchfield last night, October 3. The Indians will be back in action Thursday night, October 5, in Gillespie. Action will start at 6:00pm against local rival: Carlinville!
