Dear Editor,
After receiving my weekly mailer from State Rep. Avery Bourne, and watching 7 TV ads in one day, attacking 95th District candidate Mike Mathis, I felt compelled to write this letter.
Ms. Bourne is attempting to make this a race against Mike Madigan instead of Mike Mathis. Her constant, cartoonish, attacks border on the juvenile things 7th graders attempt. With the serious problems facing our state and district, I feel it’s time to turn our attention to which one of the candidates would best represent the interests of the 95th district.
Since graduating high school, Ms. Bourne’s accomplishments have been: Going to college, being an intern for two career politicians, APPOINTED as my state representative at the age of 22 while still in college, and either not voting, or voting present, over 115 times on the important issues concerning the district she represents. Those issues include: the meals on wheels program, property tax reform, home health services, employee negotiating issues and a host of other things.
She epitomizes the old adage, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
Since graduating high school, Mike Mathis has enlisted in the U.S. Army, served in the Vietnam War, worked as a coal miner and a job counselor, served as alderman and mayor of a small town, been a volunteer EMT and served as the Circuit Clerk of my county. He’s a homeowner, pays property taxes, raised a family, and numerous other, real life things that Ms. Bourne has only read about.
This election isn’t about dems or repubs, Madigan or Rauner, it’s a contest between Mathis and Bourne. Instead of boorish cartoons, the voters of the 95th district should focus on the qualifications of the two candidates. To me, it’s obvious that Mike Mathis is the right person to represent the 95th district in Springfield.
