Make plans this holiday season to visit Macoupin County’s “Million Dollar Courthouse” for an old fashion Christmas. The sparkle, glitter and shine of Christmas will be present in the halls, stairways and the domed courtroom of this historic courthouse built in 1870. You can learn more about the history (and scandal) during a guided tour on Saturday, December 2 from 1:00-4:00. Tours are every 30 minutes and the price is $5 per person. Children under 12 are free. There is a special combination price of $8 for tours on that day of both the Courthouse and a Sears Home.
An Open House will be hosted by the Courthouse Christmas Decorating Volunteers along with the Carlinville Tourism Committee the evening of December 2 from 6:00-8:00. This will be a rare opportunity to see the Courthouse in a different light…Christmas lights! The public is invite to step back in time and stroll down the halls to enjoy the feel of Christmas Past. Take time to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the magnificent main courtroom decorated in holly and bows. Admission will be a donation to the Courthouse Renovation Fund which will go toward a pictorial history of the courthouse which will be displayed through the halls.
We are excited for the opportunity to offer musical performances in the main courtroom throughout the evening of the Open House. The Federated Church Senior Choir of Carlinville directed by Jane Scott will be performing at 6:30 while Gillespie High School Choir Members, Chance Reiniesch and Juliann Hendricks, will begin singing at 7:00. We will end the evening with a 7:30 performance of the musical group – Seven Thirty to Eight composed of Carlinville High School/Middle School students: Dane Rosentreter, Aidan Tosh, Cameron Strubbe, and guest drummer, Gavin Van Alstine.
Since a lot of time and effort will be put into decorating the Courthouse, it was decided to offer time during the first week of December for the public to stop by to view the decorations. The Courthouse will be opened Tuesday, Dec. 5 and Thursday, Dec. 7 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. It is hoped that by offering these two weekday evenings more people will have the chance to see this magnificent building in all its Christmas glory.
If you are unable to attend and would like to help with the pictorial history display, donations can be made directly to the Macoupin County Community Foundation (MCCF). Checks should be made out to the MCCF and returned to
