Residents are invited to attend this very important meeting concerning the environmental outcomes of coal mining at Shay 1 Mine. The unlined Refuse Disposal Areas 5 and 6 add to the contamination of groundwater in the area. This contamination will continue along with additional toxins from coal ash deposits.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has scheduled an informal conference to collect written and oral statements related to the 5-year renewal of Permits 56, 209, 265, 291, and 419 for the Shay 1 Mine.
This meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at 5:30 PM, at the Carlinville City Hall, 550 North Broad, Council Chambers Room, Carlinville, IL.
There are many unanswered issues concerning health and safety of citizens in our community. The coal slurry impoundments, RDA-5 and 6, will be left in place forever and it is critical that appropriate protections are in place for the protection of our community. How will our water resources be protected with renewal of these permits when current pollution issues are not addressed? Underground coal slurry injection was approved in permit 419, but many residents have grave concerns about the safety and survival of potable water resources.
Hope you will attend and voice your concerns and ask your questions.
