A Macoupin County man died early Wednesday morning on Interstate 55 after Illinois State Police said his vehicle was struck by a semi-trailer truck near the Raymond milepost 65.
John Barnes, 56 of Girard, succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident, according to the Montgomery County Coroner. He was driving a box truck.
Police said Barnes was stopped on the shoulder for an unknown reason around 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4 and was pulling back onto the interstate when he was rear-ended by the semi-trailer truck being driven by Michael Hegger, 36 of Florissant, MO.
Hegger refused medical attention at the scene of the accident.
The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and is continuing its investigation. No other information was available at the time of publication.
