Michelle’s Pharmacy suddenly closes
Michelle’s Pharmacy customers were surprised and confused last week when the business announced they have closed all three locations in Gillespie, Carlinville and Bunker Hill.
The locations did not open as scheduled on Thursday, October 13 leading customers standing outside the Gillespie location confused and asking neighbors if they knew anything. Later in the day, most of the business activity displayed on the front door was taped over and posters hung in the windows displaying their closure.
The posters read that patient prescription records were now available at Walgreens and listed the closest Walgreens location at Litchfield along with their store and pharmacy hours. Calls to Michelle’s Pharmacy were being forwarded to Walgreens as well.
Sullivan’s Drugs in Gillespie was quick to notify the community on Thursday customers didn’t have to use Walgreens and could use any pharmacy they wish. To use Sullivan’s, they recommend calling your doctor to have your prescription sent to Sullivan’s in Gillespie because getting records from Walgreens has been slow and the records they have received from the chain have been incomplete.
A statement on Michelle’s website explained the closure and thanked customers for their business over the last 14 years. The business opened in Carlinville in 2008, Gillespie in 2009 after purchasing Dippold Drug, and Bunker Hill in 2016.
“As of today – October 13 – Michelle’s Pharmacy has closed our doors, but we want to assure you that your pharmacy records and health care needs are in good hands. To ensure your continued care, Walgreens in Litchfield 217-324-7670 and Bethalto 618-258-0822 have been entrusted with your pharmacy records. Please contact Walgreens for refills, vaccinations or questions regarding your prescriptions,” part of the statement read.
Michelle’s is owned by Michelle and Wally Dyer of Carlinville. They expressed their appreciation for the community’s and employees’ support and wished them good health. They blamed the closure on pharmacy benefit managers reduced reimbursement rates, unreasonable fees, and audits.
Their website suggested Michelle’s will continue providing services to their “pill pack” patients in their homes, assisted living centers, and nursing homes. Flu shots and COVID vaccination clinics will also continue to be available to business customers at their work sites.

Gillespie nursing home changes ownership, renamed to Gillespie Health & Rehab Center
Heritage Health Gillespie announces it has changed ownership. Renamed Gillespie Health & Rehab Center, the 100-bed subacute and skilled nursing facility provides a broad spectrum of care, including long- and short-term care and rehabilitation, in an intimate and compassionate environment.
The new ownership team is a group of individuals who are skilled nursing facility managers and operators based in Illinois. The ownership change was effective July 1, 2023, and Heritage Health was the seller.
“In these challenging times, it is very reassuring that our new ownership team has years of know-how, shared values and a great group of experienced experts – based right here in Illinois – to support our care team,” said Kim Schardan, the facility’s CEO/administrator.
Gillespie Health & Rehab Center, at 7588 Staunton Rd., in Gillespie, Ill., will benefit from the hands-on attention that comes from a smaller, but very skilled “non-corporate” ownership and management team. The team has overseen operations at similar-sized care centers, in rural and suburban communities in Illinois and the Midwest, and brings many new ideas that have been very successful at other facilities.

Great joy took place on Sunday, March 12, 2023, as members of the United Methodist Church of Gillespie witnessed and celebrated six young people being baptized and/or confirmed at the 10:30 a.m. church service.
The students professed their faith in Jesus and became members of the church.
The new members include Clayton Bethard, Izzy Manus, Lydia Lowry, Makenna Martin, Marshall Garwood, and Wyatt Rondi.
