Nick Price scored 71 points for Gillespie last week in MELHS’ tournament and was named to the all-tournament team.
The Gillespie High School boys’ basketball team (3-1) is off to a good start after winning three of their four games in the 35th annual Metro East Lutheran High School’s Turkey Tip-Off tournament to finish fifth out of 18 teams. The Miners beat Dupo and Staunton before falling to Waterloo Gibault Catholic on Friday landing them in the fifth place game versus Litchfield, who they beat 68-57.
Eli Fox led the Miners in the team’s first game of the season with 18 points over Dupo. Nick Price added 13 and Blake Hayes posted 12 in Gillespie’s 64-51 victory over the Tigers.
Gillespie returned on Wednesday by defeating Staunton, 51-25. The Bulldogs are young this year with only two seniors and no juniors on the team and the Miners had no trouble building a 23 point lead at half, 34-11. The Miners received 15 points from Nick Price, 11 from Colin Tieman and eight from Hayes.
The team’s first loss of the season, 47-69, was recorded on Friday against Waterloo Gibault Catholic despite Gillespie nailing 11 three-pointers in the match-up. The Miners were heavily outsized Friday, but consistently stayed within 10 points most of the game after trailing 24-34 at halftime. Gillespie got within six points late in the third quarter, but Gibault broke away in the opening minutes in the fourth quarter to land a spot in the championship game.

Price recorded 18 points for the Miners against Gibault and Fox tallied 12.
The Miners returned on Saturday to beat Litchfield, 68-57, for fifth place despite trailing after the first quarter thanks to the Panther’s scoring trio – Connor Simmons, Josh Franke and Cooper Scharf. Gillespie curbed the deficit in the second quarter by tripling Litchfield’s scoring to gain a 28-22 lead at halftime.
Gillespie extended their lead by 19 after outscoring Litchfield 24-11 in the third quarter and added another 16 points in the fourth quarter to finish fifth in the tournament. Price led the team with 25 points against Litchfield, Tate Wargo followed with 15 and Tieman finished with 14.
Evan Price, Nick’s older brother and Gillespie’s senior standout, hasn’t seen any playing time yet as he is currently on the sideline with an ankle injury. Evan was a first team SCC all-conference award winner last season and hopes to be on the floor this week.
Metro East Lutheran ended up winning the tournament with an overtime dramatic win over Gibault and Nick Price was named to the all-tournament team after scoring 71 points in the tournament for the Miners.
