The young Gillespie Miners football team (0-2) will return to the Schmidt Complex this evening searching for their first win of the season after dropping their second game of the season last week when they traveled to Carlinville (2-0), 20-63.
This year’s season could be a tough process for Gillespie as they attempt to bounce back from a 3-6 record from last year with an extremely young team. With only one returning starter on offense and defense, the team will be relying on senior lineman and linebacker Trae Hall and junior lineman Foli Seferi.
Carlinville struck early and often against Gillespie last week scoring just 80 seconds after the opening kickoff and extending their lead to 21-0 before the Miners found the end zone. Gillespie played a state-ranked football team for the second straight week in the 2017 season after falling in their opener to Vandalia, 20-49, while under the new leadership of Jake Bilbruck
The Miners answered with a touchdown in the first quarter ending the first 12 minutes of play behind by a pair of touchdowns, 7-21, but that would be the only touchdown the Miners would score in the first half. The Cavaliers extended their lead in the second quarter by scoring 28 unanswered points securing a 49-7 halftime lead and a running clock in the second half.
The second half rolled quickly with the game clock not being paused for any reason. The Cavalier’s junior varsity squad played the entire second half after the first series on offense. The Miners mounted a small comeback scoring 13 points in the second half while Carlinville added 14 points ending the game at 20-63.
Joey Carter completed 9 of 23 passes as the quarterback with 167 passing yards, 20 rushing yards, and one touchdown. Dominik Taylor and Anthony Kravanya led the team’s offense in both rushing and receiving. Taylor finished with 2 touchdowns, 82 rushing yards and 58 receiving yards while Kravanya finished with one touchdown, 50 rushing yards, and 68 receiving yards.
The Miners host Pana (2-0) this evening, September 8, and then host Roxana (0-2) next week, September 15. All games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
