Miners wallop Staunton to end season

Tate Wargo rushes for 99 yards against Staunton.

Tate Wargo finds open field in a rushing attempt Friday evening.

The Gillespie High School football team walloped the Staunton Bulldogs, 46-12, on Friday evening to end their six-game losing streak and to conclude their 2015 season with a 3-6 record. The team’s performance this season was minimally better under head coach Don Dobrino compared to last season when Don Borgini coached the team to a 0-9 record before announcing his retirement plan.

Staunton’s loss last Friday ended their winless season with a 0-9 record. The Bulldogs returned this season after a 3-6 record in the 2014-2015 season – just two years after placing second place in the state after squeezing into post season play with a 5-4 record.

Daniel Dobrino led the Miners over Staunton with 204 passing yards while Bobby Carr tallied 71 receiving yards and running back Tate Wargo rushed for 99 yards.

On top of passing for over 200 yards, Dobrino also completed over 80% of his passing attempts. On the defensive end, Tanner King led with five solo tackles and eight assisted tackles while Carr picked up four solo tackles and Keagen West recorded three solo tackles and four assisted tackles.

First Half

The Miners opened the game with one mindset and it was evident that their mindset remained the same throughout the four quarters of play. After forcing Staunton to turn the ball over on the first drive of the game, Gillespie covered 75 yards on their first drive to take a 6-0 lead. Wargo extended Gillespie’s lead on the team’s next drive with a 23-yard touchdown run making the score 13-0 after Chandler McDaniel’s successful extra point.

After Corey McCallister intercepted Staunton on the Bulldog’s third drive of the game, the Miners were set up nearly 90 yards away from their end zone. It wouldn’t take long though as Gillespie used the final minute of the first quarter and the first four minutes into the second quarter to find the end zone for their third touchdown of the game – extending their lead to 20-0.

Staunton ended the Miners’ scoring run on their next drive after overcoming a fourth and one play eleven yards away from the end zone. They later scored on a 3-yard touchdown rush, but missed the conversion to leave the score at 20-6 in favor of Gillespie.

Gillespie had good field position to start their next drive after Staunton unsuccessfully attempted an onside kick. It would only take the Miners about one minute to cover 54 yards to regain the 20-point lead, 26-6, after Wargo capped Nick Wyatt’s 34-yard reception with a 6-yard touchdown rush.

The Miners weren’t done scoring in the first half though after Staunton went four and out in their second drive of the quarter. After recovering the punt and running it back to their 49-yard line, Carr and Wargo combined for 47 yards rushing in two plays after Carr broke away on a 25-yard rush and Wargo followed with a 22-yard rush allowing Ethan Blevins to punch it in for the 2-yard touchdown run.

The successful conversion gave Gillespie a 33-6 lead at halftime.

Second Half

Scoring was milder in the second half since Gillespie only had two drives in the 24-minute half , which both results in a touchdown. The team’s first drive in the second half opened the third quarter and took nine minutes of play before Bryce McKinney scored on a 4-yard rush and McDaniel capped it with the successful extra point sending the lead up to 40-6.

Gillespie would strike one more time in the matchup after the team took over possession with 11 minutes remaining in the game. With the team’s second string offense on the field, Gillespie covered nearly 70 yards in four minutes of play to extend the score to 46-6 after Wargo’s 22-yard touchdown run.

Staunton never quit though and would trim the deficit down to 46-12 after a 7-yard pass capped a 69-yard drive. The Bulldogs then recovered an onside kickoff after their second touchdown, but ran out of time to add any more points on the board.
