Macoupin County State’s Attorney Jennifer Watson announced on Thursday, July 2 first degree murder charges have been filed against a Roodhouse man related to the death of a 23-month-old Carlinville girl.
Allan Castleberry Jr., 27 of Roodhouse, was formally charged for the child’s death after reportedly striking the infant’s head against a wall. The infant, Gracie Ellen Rose Nance, is the child of Courtney Rice. Rice was dating Castleberry at the time.
Rice made the 911 call on the morning of February 3, 2020, saying her child was not breathing. State’s Attorney Watson said Gillespie Benld Area Ambulance Service responded along with Carlinville Police Department.
“This is a tragic and senseless death,” Watson said before praising the Carlinville Police Department. “Carlinville Police Department was swift in responding and investigating this case. Castleberry’s arrest was the result of good police work.”
Chief Dave Haley of the Carlinville Police Department said the charges against Castleberry are just the beginning of justice for Gracie.
Castleberry’s bond was set at $1 million by Judge Meyer.
