Local pharmacist attends compounding training class
Gillespie, IL – (September 21, 2012): T.J. Allan of newly established Pro-Pharm Compounding Pharmacy recently attended a four-day pharmacy compounding training course in Houston, Texas. Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) hosted pharmacists and pharmacy technicians from the United States, Canada, and the Bahamas at its hands-on Comprehensive Compounding Course. Compounding is the pharmacy method of custom-preparing medications to meet each prescriber’s and patient’s individual needs.
At PCCA’s training course, T.J. compounded a number of dosage forms, including gel, lip balms, topical preparations, and capsules. Different flavorings were taste-tested and multiple options for medications were presented.
“Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths, ” says T.J.. “With a physician’s prescriptions a compounding pharmacist can change the strength of a medication, alter its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest, and add flavor to it to make it more palatable. The pharmacist also can prepare the medication using several unique delivery systems, such as lozenges, lollipop, or transdermal gel. Preparing these customized medication allows compounding pharmacists to achieve their ultimate goal: to help the physician and patient achieve a more positive therapeutic outcome.”
Headquartered in Houston, Texas since 1982, PCCA provides compounding pharmacists with training classes and educational events, fine pharmaceuticals, equipment, devices, flavors, as well as technical, financial, and marketing consulting to help them compound unique dosage forms. PCCA has more than 3,900 independent pharmacist members in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries around the world.
“It’s something I’ve been wanting to start for the last 4 years. I worked at a compounding pharmacy my last year of pharmacy school, and loved everything about it: the chemistry, the critical thinking, the creativity, the patient interaction, the physician/nurse interaction, and most importantly, the patient’s satisfaction. A lot of these patients that use custom compounded prescriptions have exhausted all other traditional prescription medication therapies. They’re uncomfortable and looking for help. That’s where we can make a difference. We have a lot of patients in Macoupin and Montgomery counties driving to Springfield or Glen Carbon for compounded prescriptions that they can’t find around here,” says T.J.
