“Why can’t I skip my 20 minutes of reading tonight,” some students may ask. Because reading improves language skills and broadens a student’s vocabulary, that’s why! Regular reading should be encouraged in every household.
This year, teachers are implementing some new strategies with their students, especially in the area of reading. Under the direction of Principal Angela Turcol, Ben-Gil students will have their focus on spending more time reading.
Studies show, that by the end of 6th grade, students that read 20 minute each day, will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days, while students who read 5 minutes each day will have read only 12 school days.
In order to help organize their time spent reading, students are being taught to fill out “reading logs”. These will help them keep track of the time they spend on reading. Parents will play a major role in our efforts, many will be asked to check their child’s log and some teachers may encourage parents to sign them in an effort to maintain our home/school connection.
