Officials with the Illinois State Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Wednesday evening, August 2, at approximately 10:00 p.m. in Macoupin County. The crash occurred on railroad tracks near the Brighton Village Hall.
According to a press release issued by Macoupin County Coroner Brad Targhetta, Targhetta and Chief Deputy Coroner Anthony Kravanya pronounced Melanie Adams-Swearengen, a 35-year-old female of St. Louis, Missouri, dead at the scene at 10:39 p.m. after she was ejected from the vehicle following the collision.
A preliminary investigation by Illinois State Police indicates a vehicle driven by Adams-Swearengen was northbound on South Main Street in Brighton and for unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the roadway, passed through the village hall parking lot, and came to rest on train tracks not on a grade crossing.
The vehicle became stuck on the train tracks and was struck on the passenger side by a southbound Amtrak train. The Amtrak train had approximately 44 passengers on board. One passenger was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The accident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. The cause of death is pending toxicology results.
In addition to Illinois State Police and the Macoupin County Coroner’s Office, assisting on-scene included Brighton Police, Brighton Betsy Ann Fire Protection District, Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office and Alton Memorial Ambulance Service.
