Students at Ben-Gil Elementary School celebrated the completion of a yearlong goal as they arrived at the Santa Monica Pier last week after completing a virtual cross country field trip. The school started their “Read for Kicks on Route 66” last year in St. Louis with their destination point as Santa Monica.
Each grade traveled by bus on the roadways that lined the elementary school building’s walls and the bus was powered by the number of books each grade read. The busses moved closer to the destination point as students finished books.
The school celebrated last week by treating the students to a parade of vintage cars driven by people of the BenGil area and surrounding communities. Students then went to the “sock hop” after the parade where they danced, bowled and took part in hula hoop and bubble gum blowing contests. Each child received a fruit drink a commemorative “Route 66” can as they left the sock hop.
Many children and teachers dressed in 50’s attire for the celebration.
