Police Chief introduces new police patch to Gillespie Council
Alderman Jim Alderson reviews the new police patch for the Gillespie Police Department.
Gillespie Police Chief Jared DePoppe introduced the new police patch to the Gillespie City Council during the city’s committee meeting held Monday, April 27. DePoppe said the new patch is the department’s first step toward new uniforms that are more practical and safer for officers.
The new patch is less generic than the department’s current patch and features the city’s coal mining heritage in the design. According to DePoppe, the department was in need of new patches anyway, so the redesign of the patch is at no expense to the city and he was able to purchase the new patches for less money than the cost of a reorder of the current patch.
“We went with a design that incorporates more of a local feel,” DePoppe said as he presented it. “The bottom of the State of Illinois has coal and you can see a lantern, a shovel and axe pick. This begins the process of new uniforms, but the entire process will be more localized.”

He continued by asking the council for permission to purchase a television screen for the dispatching area to allow dispatchers to monitor the department’s cameras. “The dispatchers are the ones that watch the interior and exterior cameras and getting the cameras off their main monitors would allow them to glance up and view them at all times,” DePoppe explained.
Mayor John Hicks granted DePoppe approval to make the purchase telling him to get what he needs and make sure it’s right. “Get what you want,” Hicks told him. “You want to make sure you can see the [camera feeds].”
Farley Lane Update
Chief DePoppe said he and the police chairman, Steve Kluthe, have met with Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl to help provide relief to the Farley Lane residents who complained to the council last month about the increase in traffic flow on the lane.
“We are working on having a town hall meeting,” he said. “Alderman Diveley is on the sheriff’s department and he is the liaison between the city and the department. Technically, that part of Farley Lane is outside of Gillespie’s venue.”
Lake Chairman Frank Barrett said the committee is working on other things to that will possibly alleviate some of Farley Lane residents’ frustration.
Other Items
Water chairman Dave Tucker explained there is only one chemical remaining in the old water plant, which is awaiting testing because it is unmarked. Demolition at the old water plant can begin once that chemical is tested and removed; he expects that to be next week.
During the city’s special city council meeting held before the committee meeting on Monday, the council approved to pay half of the amount for the museum display items at a cost of $1,300 from the appropriated $4,000 from the council for the former People’s State Bank location the city received from United Community Bank. Alderwoman Janice Weidner voted against the measure.
The council also approved to hire a company to figure out what needs cleaned up in old bank location. Fisher explained the company will give the council an accurate description if the building contains mold, asbestos or another hazardous material. The bid for approximately $1,000 to be paid out of TIF funds was approved with objection from alderwoman Janice Weidner.

The Wilsonville Progressive Club will celebrate and host a 90 year Anniversary Party on Saturday, May 11. The party will include a catered dinner, a live band, and fireworks.
Doors will open at 2 pm with a catered dinner being served at 4 pm. The Shane Kessinger Experience (live band) will play at 5 pm, and a grand fireworks display will be held at dusk.
The Progressive Club was originally established in 1934 by the Progressive Miners and was located on the northwest side of Wilsonville’s main street. The Club moved to their new building in January of 1949 and today this is still the current location at 212 Wilson Street in Wilsonville.
Wilsonville was founded in 1917 when Superior Coal Co. Mine No. 4 was sunk and this was the most modern mine in the Superior field. At that time, the little settlement which grew up around the mine was called Wilson. One day a worker paused and asked, “What are we going to name this town?” President Wilson was in office, thus the town was then and there named Wilson until 1919 when it was incorporated and the name expanded to Wilsonville.
The Wilsonville Progressive Club is operated and maintained by an elected panel of trustees and loyal members. The Club is open to the public and membership is always welcome. The large outdoor covered pavilion and manicured grassy side lot offer an attractive and convenient venue for any event along with inside facilities.
If you are interested in renting for any kind of event, call 217-835-3122 during open hours which are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 4 pm to close, and Sunday doors open at 2 pm. Every Sunday afternoon at 4 pm is the Queen of Hearts drawing and the Club is on Facebook as well.

LITCHFIELD, Ill. — HSHS St. Francis Hospital is offering service opportunities to area teens this summer through the 2024 Junior Volunteer Program. Applications are being accepted now through May 1.
Applicants must be high school students maintaining at least a “C” average, be a minimum of 14 years of age by June 1 and be willing to volunteer at least two hours per week during the summer program. Junior volunteers will perform a variety of duties in various hospital departments.
Registration materials are available on the hospital’s website volunteer page at https://www.hshs.org/st-francis/community/volunteer.
All participants in the program will be required to present proof of immunizations for MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), and Varicella (chicken pox). An additional requirement includes attendance at a hospital orientation.
