Coaches of the South Central Conference released the honorees for the first, second and third teams on Tuesday for the 2016-2017 basketball season and a pair of Gillespie High School players are recognized on the first team while three others were named to the second and third teams.
Earning first team all-conference honors were seniors Amanda Schmidt and Nick Price. Both Price and Schmidt recorded their respected 1,000th varsity point milestone during the 2016-2017 season as well. Price scored his 1,000th varsity point in the season-opening tournament at Metro East Lutheran in Edwardsville while Schmidt’s milestone came early in 2017 on January 11.
Both Gillespie seniors also set a string of records this season.
In addition to scoring her 1,000th point on January 11, Schmidt also set two new school records that night for Gillespie High School – most points in a single game (43 points) and most field goals in one game (17). Former record holders were Tracy Petersen with 34 points and Jodi Ottersburg Alexander with 16 field goals in one game.
Despite Gillespie finishing third in the Carlinville Holiday Tournament before the New Year, Price set four new tournament records and also tied another. Price scored 42 points versus Mt. Olive in the third place game breaking a 1976 record and also finished the tournament with 129 points breaking a 2005 record of 118 points. He also set two free throw records – beating a 1992 record for most free throws in a game (16) and most free throws in the tournament (39). Price tied the record for most three-point baskets in the four-game tournament with 16 three’s.
Other Gillespie High School athletes earning all-conference honors were junior Paige Niemeyer (2nd team), junior Karli Carr (3rd team) and senior Tate Wargo (3rd team).
