School board approves apprenticeship program for high school trades class

Published

on

Robert Swegel

School board members listen to a presentation from Robert Swegel, the training director of MCIRCC-JATC, before approving the agreement.

Students enrolled in construction trades at Gillespie High School will now be earning credit while they learn to go toward an apprenticeship program after the school board approved an agreement with the Mid-Central Illinois Regional Council of Carpenters-JATC (MCIRCC-JATC) last Monday evening.

Board members listed to a 40-minute presentation last week from Robert Swegel, the training director of MCIRCC-JATC, before deciding to adopt the curriculum for the trades’ class taught by Mark Goldasich. Swegel highlighted that students graduating from GHS with the adopted curriculum will be employable right away.

“They will make 50% on the apprenticeship scale, which is about $15/hour, but they receive the full benefit package as journeymen,” Swegel told the board. “That includes health insurance and pension, so it’s around $36/hour with the benefit package.”

He continued by saying that students quickly graduate to a higher pay level as they complete more training. The curriculum that GHS will be working under will be completely free of charge provided by MCIRCC-JATC and will allow students to earn approximately 42 college credit hours in high school.

Thank you for the opportunity to improve upon the best four year program at Gillespie High School

“The program is very progressive,” Swegel added. “It’s a registered program with the federal government. The instructor can deviate from the curriculum since it is skills based.”

Construction trades’ instructor Mark Goldasich was unable to attend the presentation, but wrote a letter to Superintendent Joe Tieman favoring the decision the board ultimately made. “This makes sense to me,” Tieman read from Goldasich’s letter. “The apprenticeship is skills based and we are already doing more in my classes than the curriculum requires.”

“I like the idea of my students earning credit for the work they complete,” Goldasich continued in his letter. “Thank you for the opportunity to improve upon the best four year program at Gillespie High School. Construction trades is building a better tomorrow through education that works.”

Superintendent Tieman also spoke highly of the MCIRCC-JATC program citing that the program doesn’t cost the district a penny since the education materials are provided free of charge. He added that students graduate into the apprentice program and directly into the union, but the district does have add a responsible bidder’s clause to any building contract over $50,000 as requested by the local carpenters union.

“We saw this as a great opportunity for our kids to have a great career upon graduating,” Tieman closed. “It’s a win-win for us.”

Athletic Field Improvements Update

Tieman updated the board with many improvements that have taken place on the district’s athletic fields. Those updates include the sprinklers installed on the football field, block for dugouts at the softball field have been installed and two loads of dirt has been delivered to both the softball and baseball fields.

He added that the dugouts at the softball field will be getting the roofs installed and he is in the process of getting pricing for bleachers for the newly built softball field located on the south side of the Ben-Gil Elementary school site.

Administrator Updates

Angela Turcol, principal of the elementary school, said teachers in the elementary school have an increased knowledge of the aspects of the Star Reading program after an instructional meeting with Jennifer Brown of the high school. Turcol also added that progress reports were sent home in September and report cards will go home on October 20. Parent teacher conferences will also take place in October on the 21 and 22.

In the middle school, Principal Jill Rosentreter said the middle school exceeded their 400 book goal in September by reading over 650 books. She also added that 16 students were elected to the middle school’s student council and 50 science fair participants took a trip to the St. Louis Science Center to collet ideas for their project topic.

At the high school building, teachers are participating in faculty meetings to learn more about the student growth portion of their evaluations. The high school will also be hosting the Macoupin County volleyball tournament on October 10. Lastly, the yearbook class took a trip to Kirkwood, MO for a photography workshop and the agriculture students took a trip to the Farm Progress show.

Other Action Items

The board unanimously voted to:

  • Employ Cynthia Weishaupt as a full route bus driver
  • Pay the September bills totaling $185,595.33 from following funds: $5,372.43 from the transportation fund, $113,289.04 from the education fund and $66,933.85 from the building fund.
  • Approve the FSY 16 district budget
