Michelle Smith collected a new piece of hardware this week. She was named as a 2A Sectional Coach of the Year by the Illinois Coaches Association (ICA).
The honor comes after Smith and her assistant coaches, Joe Kelly and Jim Matesa, led this year’s team to a new school record with the most wins in Gillespie High School’s history (31). The team also won the regional championship and split the conference championship with Carlinville.
“I’m honored,” Smith said of the award after acknowledging that the team’s season ended in the sectional championship versus Dupo. “I feel it is a testament to the wonderful assistant coaches I have and our players. We had a great season and put in a lot of hard work. The award goes to all of us.”
This year’s regional title is the softball program’s seventh regional title since Smith took over in 2005. She has a 70% winning percentage as head coach in Gillespie with a record of 212 wins and 94 losses.
Smith will receive her plaque at the ICA Hall of Fame banquet in Normal, Illinois in February 2017.
