These past couple of weeks, Andy Manar has continued to release negative ads on his opponent, Mike McElroy, as though he has an unlimited budget. To answer my curiosity about this, I went to the Illinois State Board of Elections’ website and checked out just where Manar’s funds are coming from.
The information shown on that website gives the picture of a candidate well-funded by the Chicago Political Machine. No surprise here, Manar has been an important part of the Chicago Political Machine for over a decade in Springfield. His work as the Senate Budget Director under Emil Jones and Chief of State for current Senate Majority leader Cullerton is being richly rewarded.
The Board of Elections site shows that Manar has risen over $600,000 since he began raising funds for his campaign. Early in this campaign Manar claimed several times in papers that ‘the vast majority of his funds’ have come from individuals in his district.
Now he claims that ‘more than 50 % of his campaign donations have been below $100. That may be but the Illinois Board of Elections shows that less that 10% of Manar’s funds have originated from individuals let alone individuals in the 48th Senate District.
The rest, over $500,000 comes from sources easily attributed to the Chicago Machine. Labor unions, (SEIU and AFSME) have contributed nearly $400K. I’ve heard of at least two $500/plate dinners and one $250/plate dinner being held in Chicago for Manar. There’s even a $5,000 contribution from a union on the East coast which was reported last summer in the State Journal.
It appears that the Chicago Political Machine is pulling out all the stops to get their ‘man’ elected. With the vast majority of Manar’s funds coming from the Chicago Political Machine, it’s hard to envision Manar ever voting against them and voting for the folks of the 48th Senate District he’s supposed be representing.
