Bats are hot for the Miners

The Gillespie Miners picked up a 19-0 win against Carlinville on Tuesday, April 30. Gillespie collected 19 runs and 17 RBIs on 11 hits throughout the night.

Bryce Buhs picked up the win on the mound. Buhs put in four innings of work, giving up no hits or runs with nine strikeouts. Widdener pocked the loss for Carlinville, giving up four runs on three hits over two innings.

Bryce Hohnsbehn had a perfect night at the plate, going 2 for 2 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Jack Kaylor went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 1 run plated. Colin Griffith also had a stellar night in the batter’s box, scoring 1 for 2 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Buhs had two hits on the evening, with a homer to center field. Buhs had a total of 4 RBIs in the game. Luke Shuckenbrock, Owen Pau, Jaydon Baker, and Landen Emelander all collected a hit.

The Miners sealed their victory early on in the third inning, putting up 13 runs on the board. Tristen Wargo remained patient at the plate and drew three walks against Carlinville. The defense for Gillespie was locked down, committing no errors in the game.

The Miners took the field against Dupo on Wednesday, May 1, coming out victorious 13-1.

Gillespie showed no mercy to Dupo, scoring seven runs in the first inning alone. Tristen Wargo was on fire in the leadoff spot, going 3 for 4 at the plate with 1 RBI and 2 runs plated. Hohnsben went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, and 1 base on balls. The Miners collected a total of 10 hits in their winning efforts. Carson Hailstone, Sean Haywood, Daniel Wobler, Griffith, Berry, and Shuckenbrock put a 1 in the hit column.

Owen Schweppe earned the victory on the mound for Gillespie. Schweppe went for three innings, giving up one hit and one run and striking out four. Brody Shaw made an appearance in a relief performance. Shaw gave up one hit, no runs, and struck out three. Dupo was only able to muster up two hits against Gillespie.

The Miners will take the field against Marquette Catholic on Thursday, May 2.

Two more wins on the season for Gillespie softball

The Gillespie High School softball team earned a victory over the Greenville Comets on Monday, May 6, with a final score of 7-1.

Emma Gipson earned another win in the circle. Gipson worked for seven innings, allowing one run on zero hits and striking out five. Emma Wilfong took the loss for Greenville. Wilfong worked through four innings, surrendering six runs on seven hits.

Sadie Sholtis was dominant at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Ava Parish went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Lauren Bertagnolli went 1 for 3, picking up 1 RBI and 1 run plated.

The bottom half of the lineup came in clutch for Gillespie. Macie Wright and Lauren Schuckenbrock went 1 for 3 at the plate with 2 runs plated. Wrigley Releford went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored and collected a walk. Gipson put a 1 in the hit column with a double. Bertagnolli swiped a stolen base against Greenville’s defense. Gillespie had a stellar night on defense, with zero errors committed.

The Gillespie softball team earned a 9-0 win over Hillsboro on Thursday, May 9.

Gipson had a strong showing on the mound and earned the win. The starting pitcher gave up four hits and no runs and struck out nine Hillsboro batters. Camp took the loss for Hillsboro, giving up six runs on seven hits.

Gipson carried the team offensively, going 3 for 4 at the plate with 1 RBI from a homer to right field. Schuckenbrock went 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 runs plated. Addi Cox and Releford each collected 2 hits and 1 RBI in their winning efforts. Sholtis and Bertagnolli picked up a hit and 2 RBIs in the game. Delaney Taylor added a hit and a run to the mix.

Miners pull out a win against Greenville, takes loss against Roxana

The Gillespie Miners baseball team picked up a 5-3 win over Greenville on Monday, May 6.

Bryce Buhs had another stellar night on the mound for Gillespie. Buhs surrendered three runs on three hits, pocketing 10 strikeouts in the game. Tristen Wargo also made a relief appearance to earn the win, allowing 2 hits, no runs, and striking out 4. Ben Hutchinson took the loss for Greenville. Hutchinson gave up two runs on three hits.

Gillespie and Greenville went back and forth with taking the lead, ending the game by going into extra innings with 10 innings of play.

Collin Griffith led the Miners in hits. Griffith went 3 for 5 at the plate with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Wargo went 2 for 4 at the top of the lineup with 1 RBI. Jesse Berry and Jack Kaylor went 2 for 5 at the plate, both driving in a run in their winning efforts. Jaydon Baker, Sean Haywood, and Buhs had a 1 in the hit column. Wargo collected Gillespie’s only walk in the game.

The Miners fell to Roxana in a nail biter on Thursday, May 9, with a final score of 2-3.

Dawson Lancaster took the loss for Gillespie on the mound. Lancaster put in four innings of work, giving up two runs on two hits, striking out two. Daniel Wolber was the starter on the mound for Gillespie, giving up 1 run on three hits, with two strikeouts. Cooper Harris earned the win for Roxana.

Gillespie was able to muster up a total of 8 hits against Roxana’s pitching staff. Luke Schuckenbrock led the miners at the plate, going 2 for 5. Wargo and Jaydon Baker both went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI. Griffith had a good night at the plate, going 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a base on balls. Bryce Hohnsbehn and Buhs each collected a hit in their efforts.

Miners are on a winning streak

The Gillespie Miners baseball team won against Marquette Catholic on Thursday, May 2, with a final score of 10 to 2.

Dawson Lancaster earned the win on the mound for Gillespie. Lancaster gave up only one hit on no runs, striking out three over five innings of work. Pruiit pocketed the loss for Marquette Catholic. Pruiit went five and one-third innings, giving up nine runs on nine hits. Daniel Wolber started on the mound for the Miners. Wolber gave up two runs on four hits.

The Miners collected a total of eleven hits on the night. The top of the lineup was sizzling for Gillespie, collecting eight out of the eleven hits. Tristen Wargo went 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored in the leadoff spot. Luke Shuckenbrock went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs plated. Bryce Hohnsbehn went 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Jesse Berry, Bryce Buhs, and Colin Griffith also had a hit in their winning efforts. Buhs had a triple and 2 RBIs on the night.

Gillespie had a watchful eye at the plate, drawing four walks. Buhs led the Miners with a total of two walks.

The Gillespie Miners stepped on the field against Hillsboro on Friday, May 3, coming out victorious 6-0.

Four of Gillespie’s runs came during the sixth inning, placing them well ahead of Hillsboro for the win. Wargo had another stellar performance, going 3 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 run plated. Schuckenbrock went 2 for 2 at the plate with a total of 3 RBIs. Jack Kaylor and Jaydon Baker both went 2 for 3 in the victory.

Schuckenbrock earned the win for Gillespie on the mound, allowing four hits and no runs over seven innings of work. Shuckenbrock pocketed six strikeouts in his outing. Lentz took the loss for Hillsboro, giving up two runs on five hits. Hillsboro was only able to muster up a total of four hits against Gillespie’s pitching staff.

Gillespie will face off against Roxana on Monday, May 6.
