Benld honors war heroes on Memorial Day
Big cities and small towns across the USA paid homage Monday to the nation’s war heroes, marking Memorial Day with lively parades, solemn memorials, bake sales and picnics.
Macoupin County Circuit Clerk Mike Mathis visited Benld Cemetery to honor troops who gave their lives in battle while noting that as Americans, we have the opportunity to celebrate the holiday as free people.
This Memorial Day marks the first since the end of the war in Iraq and comes weeks after Obama announced his plan to wind down combat operations in Afghanistan in 2014.
“The people that died for that freedom gave you that freedom,” Mathis said. “They love freedom so much that they give up their own.” He went on to say it is easy to talk about freedom when other people are out there doing the job for us and it is not that much to ask for them to be remembered.
Mathis went on to pay tribute to families who have lost soldiers. “They suffered a loss more than we will know,” Mathis explained. “They don’t have that loved one. They have photographs and memories, but there is still stillness.”
He went on to pay tribute to the people in attendance. “I want to thank you guys for leading by example,” Mathis closed. “Anyone can give a speech and stand up here and say ra-ra America, but what you guys did was a statement. You took the time to come out here on a special day to remember those who have served all of us.”
The color guard from VFW Staunton was in attendance as well as the Municipal Band who played for the audience after the speech. CG Meno then played taps and the ceremony came to an end.
