Howard Louis Zumwalt, 72, of Litchfield, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at 3:05 a.m. at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born in Litchfield on August 13, 1950, a son of Robert Allen and Rosemary (Blevins) Zumwalt. He attended Litchfield Schools and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Zumwalt married the former Doris Irene Burris on November 29, 1971, and she survives. Mr. Zumwalt worked for Valley Steel in Carlinville for several years. He was a welder at Ideal Welding in White City and for Worksaver Manufacturing in Litchfield. He retired as a truck driver from Curry Coal and Ice in Carlinville. Mr. Zumwalt enjoyed tinkering with old cars, going fishing and camping, and going to auctions.
In addition to his wife, Doris, Mr. Zumwalt is survived by two sons, David (Karen) Zumwalt Spensberger of O’Fallon and Jonathon Zumwalt of Springfield; two daughters, Mary Zumwalt of Litchfield and Susan (Jerry) Longwell of St. Clair, MO; three brothers, Robert (Patty) Zumwalt of Litchfield, Bert (Michelle) Zumwalt of Virden, and Orville (Angela) Zumwalt of Roodhouse, IL; two sisters, Patty Allen of Hamel and Mona (Ralph) Elizondo of Pensacola, FL; his grandchildren, Sabrina Herbert, Taylor Dilks, Stephen Strem, Michael OBrien, Jonathan Hammond, Brooke Shuey, Kayla Zumwalt, Dakota Fones, Haley Harshani, Dani Hammond, Christian Zumwalt, Ashley Frailey, Rebecca Kitchens, Jessica Wilson and Tabitha Wilson; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Zumwalt was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rosetta Jett and Kathy Ferrari; and a grandson, Jared Frailey.
No services are planned at this time. Plummer Funeral and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.
