The Gillespie Miners softball team (4-6) returned to their usual winning way over the past two weeks as the team picked up four victories in a row to curb their 0-5 start to the season.
Before losing 4-5 to Jerseyville to end last week’s schedule, the Miners posted wins over Roxana, Mt. Olive, Pana and North Mac to add some life to their season. Sophomore pitcher Addison Bryant has seemed to find her groove from the rubber striking out 51 batters in her last five outings.
On the offensive end, freshman Mackenzie Kasarda is leading the way for the team from the third spot in the line-up. Kasarda has batted 5-10 in the last three games with a homerun, two triples and four RBIs.
“We are making great strides,” Michelle Smith said of her team. “Addison is pitching well and has seemed to settle in and Beth Fields is back after being out for more than three weeks. I’m very happy with some of the younger girls contributing.”
I’m trying to keep pushing them in the right direction
Gillespie is also 2-0 in the South Central Conference with three conference games on the schedule this week. The Miners knocked down Roxana 7-1 to get their first win of the season and their first conference win before defeating Pana last week 14-1 to get their second conference victory.
The team faces conference rivals Staunton, Litchfield and Carlinville this week with a healthy lineup on their side. Smith expects some assistance from Beth Fields, who has settled in after she has returned from a hand injury, in addition to her younger girls on the team and designated hitter Lizzy Nance.
“We expect Beth to contribute to our offensive and defensive game,” Smith added. “And Clay, Kasarda, Sarti and Henrichs are filling big shoes as freshmen. Lizzy has been a force for us from the plate as a designated hitter.”
Overall, the Miners have a deep roster that Michelle Smith hasn’t had in previous years. Smith is trying to lead her team over the .500 hump by end of this week. “I’m trying to keep pushing them in the right direction and continually improving our game.”
