The Gillespie High School girls’ basketball team is off to an 0-2 start after the season opened on Monday, November 15. Starting their season on the road, the Lady Miners were edged by host Carrollton 41-43 Monday evening while team captain Amanda Schmidt scored 26 points for Gillespie.
The Lady Miners trailed the Hawks 19-25 at halftime, but outpaced them in the third quarter scoring 13 points to Carrollton’s 7 to tie the game 32-32 heading into the fourth quarter. Free throws won the game for Carrollton as they scored 9 of their 11 points in the fourth quarter from the charity line making 9 of 10.
On Tuesday evening, Gillespie held their home opener hosting Auburn and were again edged by a small margin, 56-60, with a few late calls going against the Miners. Gillespie knocked down 23 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to pick up their first victory of the season. Schmidt led Gillespie’s scorers with 20 points while Paige Niemeyer pitched in 11 points and 11 rebounds.
After opening their season with back-to-back games, the Lady Miners have a week of rest before three games on the road. Gillespie travels to Alton-Marquette next Tuesday, Nov. 22, Carlinville on Monday, Nov. 28 and then Vandalia on Thursday, Dec. 1 before returning to their home court on Saturday, Dec. 3 to host Bunker Hill.
